Tangkoko Rain forest
Tarsier monkeys are the smallest monkeys in the world, very cute! These tiny primates only grow about 9–16 cm (3–6 inches), without tail, so they easily fit in your hand. Of course we leave them alone, do not make a lot of noise around them and do not use flashlights when we take photos of those little beauties.
Apart from Tarsiers we hope to show you groups of macaque monkeys. There is no cage around the park, so we can not guarantee to see wildlife species, but we have seen macaques almost every time we visit.
The Sulawesi Cuscus bear is not really a bear but it looks a lot like one. Officially it is an arboreal marsupial, growing to up to 60 cm (24 inches).
You will hear many different wildlife species when you are in the Tangkoko rainforest. We always advice you to be really quiet, so ‘nature can come close’. Maybe you are lucky to see a Hornbill bird or some other beautifully colored tropical rain forest birds. Some you can spot in our garden too!
Tangkoko tour schedule
Tangkoko rain forest is on the other side of the North Sulawesi peninsula and close to Bitung. We go there by car in about 2 hours and 30 minutes. What time we leave depends on what kind of wildlife you want to see. To prevent too much disturbance to the animals living in the park, there are certain time blocks you are allowed to visit. In general, the best one is to be there in the afternoon. This is because one of the main attractions, the Tarsius monkey, is nocturnal and shows itself often only at dusk. But a lot is possible and depending on your wishes, we can advice you what the best schedule is.
Taking the afternoon schedule as example, we leave around 10 – 11 O’clock. Once in Tangkoko, we have lunch, which we take with us, on the beach. Often you already can spot groups of black macaque monkey’s there. After lunch we hike through the forest until dusk. Other interesting animals are for example horns bill birds and Kuskus. Further, are there beautiful big trees and lots of other interesting vegetation. If it becomes too late to be back in the resort for dinner you will have dinner in a local restaurant in Manado.
